CircusMASH

For my final university project, I collaborated with Birmingham based circus company, CircusMASH who created a short film about how the struggles of the Covid-19 lockdown have impacted the youth who are planning their career choices. I carried out research into this and further explored how restriction of the arts has impacted society historically, which can be seen in my full portfolio at the bottom of this page.

I designed and made a costume for the ring master of the circus, played by a trained aerialist, who navigates the main character through the story. I explored working with stretch fabric for the first time for the catsuit to provide a suitable garment for when the character is performing aerial. The outer jacket is more of a structured piece,  however with the addition of underarm gussets and a detachable cape, the jacket can still be used in areas of movement. I used the decorative technique of soutache to display formality and traditional styles of ring masters outfits.

Testimonials

'Katherine was very organised and kept us well informed at all times. She was very time efficient and reliable. Katherine listened to all of our ideas and was very flexible in our needs, coming up with new designs when her original ones weren't going to work on the circus equipment. The final costume was fit for purpose and we are really happy with it. It is appropriate for an aerial performer and seems durable and well made. We are very excited to see the costume in our final filming project and we would definitely consider working with Katherine in the future!' - CircusMASH

'Working with Katherine was incredibly easy, she was super helpful giving me a well defined direction she wanted to go in. For example when I questioned what type of shots she would like to see and how to show her costume. Additionally, Katherine kept me in the loop with any updates to do with the day of the shoot such as times, the venure and any other relevant information. I would happily work with Katherine again and recommend her to anyone who may need her help.' - Sam Ip (photographer)
