Jekyll & Hyde

For my Final Major Project of my Art and Design foundation course, I chose to centre my project on Victorian literature, demonstrated through the subjects of photography and fashion and textiles. I explored various Victorian literature before deciding to focus on Jekyll & Hyde. The project explores a female alternative of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, creating a final costume piece captured through different methods of photography.

I used different textile surface techniques to create the costume which depicted the two personalities of Jekyll and Hyde. For the good side, I used fabrics such as lace and explored various techniques with it such as lace printing with a heat press and dissolvable vilene creating delicate panels in the sleeves. For the evil side of the costume, I used fabric distressing techniques such as slash and burn to suggest a more brutal characteristic.

I experimented with different photography techniques to capture the final costume using both modern and Victorian cameras. A Victorian brass field camera was used to take still shots of the subject sat down to represent traditional Victorian photoshoots, whereas a digital camera was used to be able to show the details of the costume and the character moving around in it.

The final costume and photographs were displayed in an exhibition open to the public.
